Ixempra (ixabepilone) plus Xeloda (capecitabine) doubled the progression-free survival (PFS) rate for women with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), according to research that analyzed the results of five Phase II and two Phase III studies. In all, 2,261 were evaluated, with 24.5 percent, or 556 of these having TNBC—cancers that are negative for estrogen, progesterone and Her2 (Human Epidermal growth factor Receptor 2).
In an overall analysis of all trials, women with TNBC who used both Ixempra and Xeloda saw an overall response rate (ORR) of 23 to 31 percent, with results varying from study to study.
The pathologic complete response for TNBC women on Ixempra was 26 percent, versus 15 percent in the non-triple-negative population.
Patients with metastatic breast cancer in the studies had a variety of treatments before Ixempra therapy, so their ORR varied significantly, from 6 to 55 percent; rates, though, were comparable to those in patients with non-triple-negative.
Progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly longer for triple-negative patients treated with Ixempra and Xeloda (4.2 months) compared with treatment with Xeloda alone (1.7 months).

Thanks for a recent article--everything I had googled was from 2007 or 2008. I have read from 4 or 5 other women though that although xeloda/ixempra initially works, when the cancer comes back it is "super charged" and difficult to control. any thoughts?
Carole: This research was actually an overview of multiple studies, so it might have included some of the data from the 2007/8 studies you mention. In general, when cancer comes back, it tends to be aggressive. But newer treatments are making a dent in how it progresses, which is certainly a step in the right direction.
I'm about to begin my first cycle of Xeloda. I have TNBC, am post modified radical mastectomy, and post 30 radiation treatments.The cancer came back in my brain and I've had gamma knife surgery. I'm very anxious to see success for myself and others.

Barb im new to this posting and started xeloda 2 weeks ago and now on a break for 7 days i begin ixempra june 8th 2012 i too have brain tumors but my tnbc is everywhere im 39 and have been fighting for 1.5 years with no success. so praying that this combo works. how are u doing esp with brain tumors? any thoughts from anybody about feeling, hair loss?

I too have 4 brain tumors but received radioactive surgery on them. ive been on xeolda for 2 weeks off this week will begin ixempra. interested to see how u r and everybody else who is going through this. praying for great results and staying positive. im stage 4 cancer but still not giving up i feel really good too
